I just finished Почта
. I'm quite happy about this. Although I can't really speak Russian yet, I've laid a good foundation for myself. Current Mood: happy
I'm working out of several books to learn Russian. So although I have covered quite a bit of ground, I haven't finished any of them yet . Почта
has ten chapters, and I'm in the ninth one so I should be done with it tommorow, or Sunday at the latest. It's a very small step towards learning my chosen language, but also a very necessary one.
I would recommed Почта
to anyone who has no substantial knowledge of Russian, and/or is unfamiliar with the Russian alphabet (either printed or script - they are quite a bit different). For one, the book is very economical ($10.95 US, and $17.95 Canadian). Some basic points on Russian culture are made, and I learned quite a few new words while I was practicing Russian script (I had already taught myself the printed alphabet). Also, since it is such a thin book (119 pages, that includes the answer key, an appendix, a vocabulary list, and a reference section called 'Taking It Further'
. I spent roughly a night on each chapter and feel I retained most of what I read (I scored 90% on all the exercises).
If you are curious about the book, you can find it here. Current Mood: accomplished

My favourite poem
Translation
Everything begins with love
Everybody repeats that everything began with a word
But I proclaim again and again
That everything begins with love
Everything begins with love:
глаза цветов,eyes of flowers
глаза ребенка –eyes of a kid
все начинается с любви.everything begins with love
Everything begins with love.
With love!
I know that for certain.
Everything, even hate
сестра любви.is an own and eternal sister of love.
Everything begins with love.
мечта и страх,dream and fear,
вино и порох.vine and gunpowder.
и подвиг –tragedy, anguish and feat
Everything begins with love.
The spring will whisper: “Live!”
And you will swing by this whisper
And you will stand straight
And you will begin,
Everything begins with love.

Lj and Russian Fonts
I'm not sure why this is the way that it is, but when I type something in Russian letters in Semagic, it doesn't look right when it posts in Lj. Is anyone else noticing this? Does anyone have a suggestion as to a better font to use that will show up correctly in Lj? Current Mood: frustrated
Explitives (Re:
Note the use of the Russian explitive 'Дурак' by the young boy wearing the backwords 'Thor' helmet. Russian Slang & Colloquial Expressions
lists the following entry:Дурак, -а,
m., rude. The male genitals (lit., a fool). "His equipment hardly fits into his swimming trunks."
Observe its use:
Edit: Whoops! It's the red headed girl that uses the word! Current Mood: contemplative

(A Book Review)
I picked up an interesting looking book called 'Dermo!' (Russian for 'Shit!'). It is interesting, and probably useful as far as knowing what other people are saying about you in a language that is not your mother tongue. The author claims that Russians curse and swear so much that if you don't make it a part of your own speech, you'll be instantly identified as a foreigner, and that to use explicatives will cause you to be seen as 'one of them', and will get you extra respect.
Knowing the smell of freshly laid cow manure when I smell it (I spent my early childhood on a small farm), I decided to ask some Russian friends about this. They enthusiastically agreed with me that the author is indeed full of drek. The book is an interesting read, if you are not easily offended, however. Buyer beware - use at your own risk. Current Mood: contemplative

If you are still around, and interested in participating, then please let us know a little about you, your reasons for wanting to know Russian, and your current level of ability. As for me:
I'm a student going after a dual masters in Accounting and Business. I want to know Russian for business purposes, but also for making friends. Also, I plan on being in Sochi in 2014 for the Winter Olympics. My level of understanding is very very basic. Current Mood: calm
I just picked up some cyrilic keyboard stickers off E-Bay for typing in Russian. I'll be able to do a lot more now that I have these, I think it will save quite a bit of time and frustration. Current Mood: cheerful
